Accessible YOUniverse focuses on increasing inclusion of people with physical disabilities through advocacy and education.
Though the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted over 20 years ago, people with disabilities still lack access to many aspects of their communities. Many businesses and companies are unaware of what steps they need to take to be welcoming to customers with disabilities, whether in a strictly legal sense, or in a broader moral and ethical sense.
Making a community more inclusive to people with disabilities encompasses much more than just ensuring people with disabilities have access to employment, healthcare, and housing. Full inclusion means that people with disabilities are able to get around their community and patronize all business and services that able-bodied individuals do, without having to fight for access.
Accessible YOUniverse seeks to bring community leaders together, facilitating long-overdue conversations that will help ensure that the voices of people with disabilities are heard.
To bring about this change, Accessible YOUniverse has the following priorities:
Priority 1: ADVOCACY
Lead a summit on the state of accessibility in the city of Pittsburgh. Develop plan of action based on town hall outcomes.
pRIority 2: COmmunity engagement
Hold a series of round-table conversations around accessibility with leaders in a variety of sectors
PRIORITY 3: EDUCATION
Continue to speak at community events and seek out opportunities to educate others through presentation.
