Beyond the ADA: Planning with Disability Inclusion in Mind
The ADA lays out the legal requirements related to accommodations for people with disabilities, but true inclusion goes further than meeting the letter of the law. Many times, people with disabilities are unintentionally left out or choose not to attend events because their needs may not be met. This workshop will offer general guidelines and suggestions for making events, businesses, and other functions more welcoming and accommodating to people with physical disabilities.
After a quick discussion of best practices, we will use audience participation to guide people through the process of planning and executing a sample program with disability inclusion in mind. Going through a real-world scenario will help participants understand the varied, often individualized nature of disability accommodations and will provide them with the tools to implement applicable best practices.
